The era of 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs and players is here. Let the fun begin!

The world’s first 4K Ultra HD (UHD) Blu-ray disc player is here. Samsung’s UBD-K8500 is now shipping from Amazon and other retailers, securing the electronics giant the title. While some existing Blu-ray players offer 4K upscaling of 1080p HD content, the UBD-K8500 is the first, and currently the only, to be able to play the new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs (also now available from Amazon and other retailers). Samsung’s unit can also play all of your existing HD Blu-ray, and DVD discs.

More Color, More Contrast, More Sound

The audio and video standards for the new 4K Blu-ray discs offer a new level in quality over traditional high-definition Blu-ray discs and standard definition DVDs. Not only is their embedded video 4x the resolution of traditional 1080p HD Blu-rays, but UHD Blu-rays support High Dynamic Range (HDR) and a significantly expanded color gamut. 4K Blu-ray discs also support immersive audio formats like Dolby Atmos and DTS:X.

While the increased resolution of UHD is a good thing, it’s the richer color, and noticeably greater detail that gives 4K TVs and 4K Blu-rays their jaw-dropping image quality. That’s why 4K, with all it’s improvements in color, sound, and resolution, is the proven future.

The Year of 4K

2016 has turned out to be the year of 4K. True, we’ve had 4K TVs pre 2016, but now we have 4K Blu-rays, and the first of many 4K Blu-ray disc players. 2016 has also seen more 4K content from streaming services like Amazon and Netflix, as well as the world’s first 4K live broadcast of a major sporting event when DirecTV brought the The Master’s to us this past April.

Samsung’s UBD-K8500 is the world’s first 4K Blu-ray disc player, but it won’t be the last. Expect to see 4K Blu-ray disc players from every major manufacturer in the future.
